A Lidl Bit of History
Lidl comes from humble beginnings, established as a neighborhood grocery wholesaler in 1930s Germany. In 1973, the first modern Lidl store opened in Ludwigshafen (25 miles south of Frankfurt). Employing three people and offering about 500 products. This small store was to become the foundation of Lidl’s far reaching expansion.
By the mid 1980s, Lidl had expanded to over 300 stores in Germany. Even as the company continued to grow at a rapid rate, the individual stores never lost what made them so appealing; value, quality and outstanding customer service.
Throughout the 1990s, Lidl transitioned into an international retailer. Numerous stores opened in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and various other European countries. Offering unbeatable value wherever it went, Lidl solidified itself as a major player in the international retail market.
By 2015, Lidl had moved into the Top 5 on the list of the world’s largest retailers. The company has over 10,500 stores and more than 260,000 employees, serving communities stretching from Ireland to Cyprus. Simply put, the biggest expansion is just beginning.
